When cognitive therapy is teamed up with positivism, we get cognitive positivism, the most powerful healing tool in the entire field of behavioral medicine.

Positivism is simply the opposite of negativity. It implies that we hold only positive beliefs, thoughts and emotions. When we do, we perceive the world in a friendly, nonthreatening way and our minds become calm and relaxed. Swiftly, the hypothalamus recognizes this calm mindset and turns on the Relaxation Response. The entire mind-body enters a calm, relaxed and healthful state in which it remains for as long as we continue to hold a positive mindset.

We have no downers or bad moments or bad days and we continue to enjoy every moment of every day. As a result, we experience unbroken high-level wellness and we remain completely free of headaches and other diseases or dysfunctions.

“But 1 couldn’t possibly live like that,” you might say. “I need to get angry so I can appreciate the calm periods in between. And how could I feel happy unless I have blue periods to contrast them with?”

If that or something like it was your response, you have probably diagnosed the cause of your headaches.

In reality, the only time we need to experience a fear-based emotion is when we are actually threatened by physical danger. Other “reasons” are all too often excuses by people who prefer the stimulation of strong emotions to the seemingly unexciting alternative of experiencing unbroken calm, joy and inner peace.

There are two easy ways to recognize when we are being run by fear-based beliefs. One is that we may feel too tense and upset to experience calm and relaxation or to use sound, rational, unbiased judgment. Another is that we are coming from a position of scarcity and lack.

When our awareness is guided by fear-based beliefs, we are concerned only with getting our own self-interests satisfied. This translates into getting security; getting enough sex, food and stimulation; and getting power through being right or claiming territory or manipulating people; or getting more possessions, prestige, fame, recognition, or achievements. On this low level of consciousness—which is where most people spend most of their time—we are primarily concerned with getting rather than with giving.

All these positions are based on fear: the fear that there won’t be enough to go around; that we won’t get our fair share; that our rights may be violated; or that we won’t be accorded recognition or prestige. While beliefs on this low level may appear to bring us temporary pleasure, they almost never lead to lasting happiness or satisfaction. All too often they are the cause of chronic headaches.
